Who would have thought that making book accessories at home could be so easy? For those who don’t know about them yet or have found their love for reading rather late in life, book accessories are a new rage among book nerds of almost all ages. 3 Easy Handmade Book Accessories Ideas At Home - DIY

1.Book Bouquet

Book Bouquet

A handmade book bouquet is the perfect way to redecorate your study or library. The best part about them is that they don’t wither away. You can carve out flowers like lilies, roses, tulips and carnations from the pages of any old or recycled books. You can use multiple layers of pages to make them sturdy and keep the ones with your favorite chapters and/or phrases on the top. All you need is:

  • A few straws
  • Green tape or lace
  • Tube of super glue
  • A pair of scissors and
  • Your old books

Start by covering the straws with the green lace and cut of the extra at the end. Cut out the pages in the shape of petals depending on the type of flower you want to make. Use a metal wire to twirl the petals in case you decide to make a rose. Just hook in the metal wire at the end of the straw.

In case of other flowers, as you place the petals in place, make sure to leave space in the middle for the straw to hold with the glue. Paste the readied flower at the end of the straw with the help of super glue and let it dry. Repeat the procedure with other straws as well and there you have it, your very own handmade book bouquet.

2.Book Safe

Book Safe

This is yet another handmade book accessory that will use up your fat old books (emphasis on fat and old). Make sure to use only a worn out book or a journal book with missing pages. In a few simple steps you can have your very own handmade book safe and all you need to grab is an:

  • X-acto knife and carefully separate the cover of the book
  • Now place the pages on a band saw and cut out the inner part leaving behind a margin on the edges
  • Attach the book cover back with the help of super glue and you are done

You can finish the DIY with a handmade book cover of your own. For that you are going to need:

  • Decorative paper or jute or thick handmade paper that is used for oil paintings
  • Some sequins
  • Glitter
  • Marker
  • Lace

Cover the book neatly with the sheath of your choice and start getting creative. You can paint a landscape or caricature on it or attach lace, draw with shimmery pens and then decorate with glitter to make it look as you please. At the end you can attach a lock setup to the book which is easily available at any craft store. That is it; your book safe is all set. You can keep your keys, your heirlooms and even your iPod in it if you want.

3. Handmade Bookmarks

Handmade Bookmarks

These are the perfect handmade book accessories for everyone who has a book in their bag or car, or backpack or even in their toilet. In other words these are ideal for a book lover. Bookmarks are their best friend that is after their favorite book because they let them keep track of where they were. And out of them the ones that stay, I mean the ones that literally stay are the elastic ones. Making elastic bookmarks at home is probably the most fun and the easiest thing to do. First things first:

  • Measure the book’s height
  • Select the length of the elastic accordingly
  • You can go for any color of elastic bands available in the market, just make sure that they are visible on the book you are going to put them on
  • Cut them in the desired length if too long
  • Sew the edges neatly to make sure they grip around the book without slipping off

Now to make them even more special; what you need is:

  • A cardboard
  • An old greeting card
  • Some colored glossy paper
  • Lace
  • Satin cutouts
  • Glitter

You can cut shapes of the cardboard or greeting card, paint them and write your favorite quotes on them, decorate them with satin or lace or cover them with a colored paper and put some decorative sequins and glitter. Now once you have that colorful and exotic looking trinket in place, it is time to stick it with super glue on the elastic where you sewed it. Let it dry and make your reading sessions even more interesting.
